Rise Against - Hero Of War.mp3

The war looked good at the beginning, men were volunteering to fight and promises were being made that the troops would be home for Christmas. Canadians were confident that the war would be over quickly, but with all of the men working industries back home and all the casualties piling up, recruitment became a serious issue. Many felt they were contributing already to the war effort and the French Canadiens felt that this was not Canada's war. Although Prime Minister Borden promised he would not make joining the army mandatory, a crisis about Conscription swept the nation.

With all the men off to war due to the conscription crisis the Canadian government needed someone to fill all the jobs that were necessary to keep the country running and to provide commodities for those at war. The Canadian government counted on women to be engineers, managers, factory workers and farmers in order to keep the economy afloat. Another issue with Conscription was the strong opposition of the French Canadiens and their lack of loyalty to Britain. This caused great divide between the people of Canada.
